Liverpool strongly back in for Lacazette, who’s suffering Lyon contract dispute [L’Equipe]

Liverpool could yet make a move for French international striker Alexandre Lacazette this summer, with his current club Lyon having so far failed to agree terms on a much talked about new contract.

According to reports in L’Equipe, who are referenced here by talkSPORT, speculation is rife that the forward will submit a transfer request before the new season starts.

As the source states, the 24-year-old is currently contracted until 2018, but Lyon are keen to secure their prize asset to a new long-term deal in order to finally put an end to interest from Liverpool, Bayern Munich and PSG.

Lacazette scored 31 goals in just 38 games last season, making him one of the deadliest strikers on the continent over the last twelve months, while we still desperately need a new striker following the departure of Luis Suarez last year.

Christian Benteke is the name that has been most regularly associated with the Reds since the transfer window opened at the start of the month, but Brendan Rodgers doesn’t appear to be keen on paying the £32.5m asking price (via the Daily Mail).

If Lacazette does indeed prove to be available, then there’s surely little doubt over which player we’d prefer. The Frenchman scored more than twice the number of goals that Benteke did last season, while his style of play is arguably more suited to Liverpool than the Belgians – with the former preferring to run in behind defences and the latter more accustomed to holding the ball up for others.

How much truth there is in these rumours remains to be seen, but until Lacazette puts pen to paper somewhere else, then Liverpool fans will hold out hope that this one could still come off.
