Liverpool have been made the bookies’ favourites to sign Barcelona forward Pedro this summer, as the Reds begin to eye up potential replacements for wantaway forward Raheem Sterling.
SkyBet are now quoting 5/2 for Liverpool to sign the 27-year-old this month, after a number of bets were made at 6/1.
The transfer saga surrounding the Spanish international can be traced back to earlier this year. The Daily Mirror reported back in March that Barcelona had placed a £15m price tag on the player’s head, having supposedly deemed him surplus to requirements following the signing of Luis Suarez.
Two months later, The Telegraph stated that Pedro was ready to leave the club after falling down the attacking pecking order, and that his asking price had been reduced to £7m.
However, these reports were proved to be false in June when he signed a new deal at the club, taking him up until the summer of 2019. The contract came with a reported buyout clause of £110m (via The Guardian).
Despite this agreement being reaching, reports in Spain emerged within a month that stated that Barcelona would still be willing to listen to offers for the player, and that we had made contract with them over a €30m deal.
Those rumours have persisted over the last few weeks and Sterling’s likely departure (via Daily Express), could provoke a renewed interest from Brendan Rodgers’ side.
However, Barcelona are not permitted to sign a new player until the January transfer window, so are unlikely to want to sell their star until they are able to secure a suitable replacement. With Pedro having signed a new contract they can almost afford to demand whatever they want for player, regardless of whether or not he wishes to leave.
Ultimately, we’d be surprised if we were to pull this one off over the next couple of weeks, but there’s no harm in dreaming. Pedro, a player with 22 major honours, would certainly be a more than ideal replacement for our current crybaby.
