Raheem Sterling will face disciplinary action if he lied about training illness

The Liverpool Echo are suggesting this morning that Raheem Sterling will face disciplinary action is he is found to have lied about being unwell on Wednesday.

Sterling failed to arrive for training yesterday, just hours after telling Brendan Rodgers that he didn’t want to travel with the rest of the squad on the pre-season tour and reiterated his desire to leave.

According to the Echo, if club medical staff establish that Sterling was in fact fit to train then he’s likely to be fined, while he’ll also be told again that he’s expected to join his teammates in the trip to the Far East.

Sterling has been trying hard to force through a move to Manchester City, but a third bid from Manuel Pellegrini’s side has so far not been forthcoming. As the Echo tell us, two offers have already been turned down, and the last of those – worth £40m – was made three weeks ago.

There’s the strong possibility that if City don’t act soon, then Sterling could be forced to fly out this coming Sunday, only to return when the outgoing Premier League champions eventually make their inevitable move.

It’s quickly becoming an ugly situation that honestly doesn’t look much closer to a conclusion. Unless City stump up the cash then it seems the Reds are determined to dig their heels in.

We can only hope that this is sorted out soon enough so as to not have too much of a detrimental effect on the rest of the squad, as they attempt to prepare themselves for a new season that is now just a month away.
