Rodgers explains why Liverpool are signing Benteke

Brendan Rodgers has praised our transfer business so far this summer, highlighting firepower as the top priority this window, as reported by the Liverpool Echo.

As we close in on the signing of Aston Villa’s Christian Benteke (via the Echo), we are set to sign yet another player capable of scoring freely.

We struggled for goals last season, and it was a large part of the reason we failed to secure Champions League football. We suffered without the goals of Barcelona bound Luis Suarez and injury plagued Daniel Sturridge, with our tally dropping from 101 in 2013/14 to just 52 in 2014/15.

Benteke, Danny Ings, James Milner, and Roberto Firmino are all players capable of getting goals, and Rodgers is convinced we have fixed one of the major problems from last season.

“It was just clear we needed to score more goals,” he said.

“But I wouldn’t want that to be taken as that the other side isn’t important. I believe that our defensive organisation is critical to allow our talents to flourish.

“You’ve seen on this tour already the idea – our pressing game, the intensity to get the ball back quickly. We can do that when we have all the tools in the squad to score goals and create them.

“A few years ago we needed to improve our goal tally and we did that and it gave the team a little bit of profit. I feel it was the same this summer.

“We were down on our goals. Overall it is the balance we need to improve offensively and defensively and the players that will contribute to both.”

Last season was somewhat disappointing, especially when compared to the season just prior. The upcoming campaign is looking far more promising however, and we should at the very least be targeting a return to the Champions League.
