Liverpool fans will be delighted to see defender Jon Flanagan back in training – if only on his own. The England international posted the picture below on social media website Instagram earlier today, showing him practising on a workout bike.

The 22-year-old last turned out for the Reds in May 2014, as Liverpool beat Newcastle 2-1 on the final day of the season, and has only played one fixture of any kind since then – for England against Ecuador in a World Cup warm-up game.

Despite his ongoing problems, the full-back signed a new contract earlier this summer, as Brendan Rodgers kept faith in a player who featured heavily in his best season as Liverpool manager – when we finished second.

The academy prodigy, who was once dubbed the ‘Scouse Cafu’, missed all of last season with a knee injury and underwent a third operation to try and correct the problem in April.

According to reports in The Guardian, he’s not expected to be back until October at the very earliest, and even then it’s likely to take him a long time to readjust to life back in first-team football.

Here’s the latest from Flanagan…
