‘I give it a year’ – Eight famously short Liverpool careers, with Balotelli set to go

Mario Balotelli‘s Liverpool career looks to be over. The Independent revealed on Friday morning that the Italian had been told to train away from the rest of the first-team squad, with the Reds actively looking to move him on.

The 24-year-old, who was only signed from AC Milan last summer, scored just one Premier League goal during his single season at the club. And now, following the summer arrivals of Christian Benteke, Danny Ings and Divock Origi, he has seemingly been deemed surplus to requirements.

However, if he is to leave us this summer, he wouldn’t be the first Liverpool player to come under the here today, gone tomorrow category. In the list below, we count down eight other short-lived Anfield careers…

Christian Ziege

The left-back enjoyed an excellent career, winning 72 caps for Germany as well as a succession of major honours both at home and abroad. It never quite happened for him at Liverpool, where he was only a bit-part player, although he did end his single season at the club as a treble winner. He managed 32 appearances for us in total.

Titi Camara

The popular striker remains something of a cult hero among Liverpool fans, despite lasting for little more than a year at Anfield. He famously broke down in tears during a game against West Ham after scoring the winning goal, with the game coming just hours after the death of his father. He also scored the only goal in a 1-0 win at Arsenal.

Jan Kromkamp

The Dutch international was brought to the club in January 2006. He played 18 times, won the FA Cup, and then went home again – all in the space of eight months. He replaced Josemi as our back-up right-back, serving as understudy to Steve Finnan, but was not deemed good enough to command a long term future at the club.

Antonio Nunez

A player that shall forever be remembered for his role in taking Michael Owen to Real Madrid – having joined Liverpool in part-exchange for the prolific striker. He managed 27 appearances and one goal during his single season at the club, after which he returned to Spain with Celta Vigo. Still a Champions League winner in 2005.

Craig Bellamy

The Welshman achieved something quite special – he managed to have two one-year spells at the club – not something we can see Balotelli doing in the future. He scored nine goals on each occasion and helped us win both the Community Shield – during his first spell at the club – and the League Cup – during his second.

Robbie Keane

Keane lasted less than six months during an ill-fated spell at Anfield, despite ironically being one of our most expensive players of all time. The Republic of Ireland international, who we sold back to former club Tottenham, scored just seven times in 28 appearances for the club. Currently playing at LA Galaxy with Steven Gerrard.

Raul Meireles

The Portuguese was a fine player for Liverpool and was probably one of the few good decisions Roy Hodgson made during his time at the club. The midfielder scored five goals in 41 appearances, including one against Everton in Kenny Dalglish’s first game back as manager. He handed in a transfer request that summer, joining Chelsea.

Charlie Adam

One of a host of signings made by Dalglish in his only summer transfer window during his second spell as Liverpool manager. After an impressive season for recently-relegated Blackpool, the Scot struggled to deal with the step up in class and was subsequently moved on by the incoming Brendan Rodgers, joining Stoke City.
