Sheyi Ojo talks first Liverpool goal and what he wants from Wolves loan move

Posted by

Liverpool youngster Sheyi Ojo has set his sights on guiding Wolves to promotion back to the Premier League, after joining the Championship club on a season-long loan deal.

The 18-year-old winger, who recently signed a new contract to extend his stay at Anfield, made his senior debut for the Reds during our tour of the Far East last month. He then added to his rapidly growing reputation by scoring the winning goal during our pre-season victory over Swindon Town on Sunday.

However, rather than plunge him straight in at the deep end, the boss wants the player to go out and get more first-team experience before he gets a taste of life in the top flight – with Wolves undoubtedly a perfect destination for his talents to continue to grow.

“Brendan Rodgers told me that he wants me to get more experience,” Ojo admitted.

“Wolves is a great place to do that. It’s a club moving forward, trying to get promotion. I’m just really happy to be a part of it. Hopefully I can make a good impression and do well this season.”

Ojo was one of a number of talented young players on show last weekend, with the likes of Ryan Kent and Pedro Chirivella also featuring in the game against Swindon.

“It (scoring against Swindon) was really good. I was happy to get some minutes,” he added. “The manager told me to go on and try to make a difference and luckily I was able to score the winner so it was a good feeling.”

However, the youngster will now have to quickly shift his focus ahead of the first round of domestic fixtures this weekend, with Wolves taking on Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park.

“Now my concentration’s fully focused on Wolves and hopefully I can make a good impression,” he continued. “I’m really excited. It’s a really good club. It’s got great facilities. All of the players are nice, they have welcomed me to the club and the staff are brilliant as well.

“I’ve heard a lot about the attacking force with Benik Afobe and Nouha Dicko so I’m looking forward to linking up with them. Hopefully we can create some problems and score some goals. Everything’s going well, I’m just looking forward to starting the season this weekend.”

Ojo spent the second-half of last season on loan at Wigan and impressed despite the club’s relegation to League One. He was voted man-of-the-match on his debut after coming on as a second-half substitute and eventually made 11 appearances in total.

“If I look back at my time with Wigan, it’s definitely helped me both mentally and physically,” he said. “I think this time around I’ll be better prepared for the loan.

“The Championship’s very physical, you’ve got to be ready for anything. Anything can happen. There are a lot of challenges, I usually get tackled quite a lot and create loads of fouls. I’ve got to be prepared for that but I’m just looking forward to my time here.”

We wish Sheyi all the best for the season ahead!
