Phil Thompson picks his ideal Liverpool XI to start against Stoke – no anchorman

Former Liverpool great Phil Thompson has had his say on how Liverpool should line up against Stoke this weekend, as Brendan Rodgers’ side prepare for the opening game of the new Premier League season.

There are still several selection issues to be debated – most notably at left-back, centre-back and in the attacking midfield positions – and Thompson has come up with an interesting solution here.

As you can see – via the tweet posted below – the three-time European Cup winner turned Sky Sports pundit has gone with a change in formation, favouring the 4-2-3-1 we played in Helsinki last weekend, rather than our more traditional 4-3-3.

This has allowed space for Adam Lallana, Roberto Firmino and Philippe Coutinho to all start behind the central striker, Christian Benteke, although there’s still no room for Jordon Ibe.

Further back, he’s gone with Mamadou Sakho over Dejan Lovren at centre-back, and Alberto Moreno in place of Joe Gomez on the left side of defence.
