It’s been another busy summer for Brendan Rodgers and Liverpool and we still have the remainder of August for the Merseyside club to bring in more players if they so desire.
More than £60 million has been invested as the Northern Irish manager looks to guide the Reds back into the Champions League. Most of these signings paid for by the sale of Raheem Sterling to Manchester City alone.
2015-16 was quite a forgettable season in the end for Liverpool as they crashed out of both the League Cup and FA Cup at the semi-final stage and ended up finishing sixth in the Premier League.
Rodgers can be spared some criticism following the sale of Luis Suárez to Barcelona – they simply couldn’t keep hold of him, whilst Daniel Sturridge spent much of the season out injured, making only seven Premier League starts.
There were a number of questionable signings made 12 months ago – substantial cash was spent on Lazar Marković, and few ever thought that Rickie Lambert or Mario Balotelli would be a success at Anfield.
This summer though, the Liverpool manager appears to have purchased well. Christian Benteke will fire in the goals up front, Roberto Firmino is a talented playmaker and goalscorer from midfield, James Milner is a solid acquisition on a free transfer and Nathaniel Clyne is an upgrade at right-back.
The season kicks off at the Britannia Stadium on Sunday for Brendan Rodgers’ side, looking to avenge their 6-1 thrashing on the final day of last season. And they’re in good shape to do so. Mark Hughes’ side could be without Ryan Shawcross and are still without Bojan. We believe the new players at Liverpool will help them to three points on the opening weekend.
Liverpool are 13/10 to win at Stoke City with the bookmakers – one of the better value bets you can find this weekend.
Given Liverpool’s defensive record last season and the promise they offer in attack heading into the new season, backing over 1.5 goals in each of their first five Premier League games this season at 5/2 must sound tempting.
A more attractive bet for Liverpool fans could be the 5/1 that Sky Bet are offering to do the double over rivals Everton this season. Though both matches ended in a draw last season, the blue half of Merseyside have not experienced a win in their last nine Premier League meetings and have so far been very quiet in the transfer market.
Ultimately though, Liverpool fans are questioning where their side are going to finish in the Premier League this season. Unfortunately, it may be outside the top four once again, as on paper, they don’t quite match up as well as the likes of Arsenal and Manchester United in competing for Champions League football.
There are odds of 1/3 of Liverpool finishing outside the top four, but fans may prefer to be optimistic and go with a bet of 3/1 on Liverpool to lift a trophy of any kind this season. They came so close to reaching a domestic cup final last season.
