Jamie Carragher unimpressed by Jose Enrique’s ‘alienation’ claims

Jamie Carragher has slammed former teammate Jose Enrique for claiming Brendan Rodgers had alienated him from the rest of the Liverpool squad – more than six months on from his last appearance for the Reds.

Enrique, who has barely featured over the last two seasons due to injuries, poor form and the arrival of fellow left-back Alberto Moreno, has been told that he is free to leave the club this summer and has been asked to be train with the reserves until he finds a new team – as The Guardian report.

This has led the 29-year-old Spaniard to attack his manager in an interview with Marca (cited by the Liverpool Echo), in which he vows to stay and fight for his place until his contract expires next summer.

Carragher, who played with Enrique for two years before his retirement in the summer of 2013, implies that the defender is purely motivated by money, rather than the opportunity to kick-start his career elsewhere.

“[Enrique] said he wanted to fight for his place. He added that he had looked to Spain for a move but economic conditions make it difficult,” Carragher wrote in his Daily Mail column.

“That translates as: I’m staying because no-one in Spain can afford me and I don’t care if I don’t play (just like last season) because I’m waiting to go on a free next summer when my contract expires.

“I am sure there are clubs in England or Spain who would want him for less money. It is about whether he really has the hunger to play even if it means a pay cut.”
