Report discusses Tiago Ilori’s immediate Liverpool future

Posted by

Liverpool defender Tiago Ilori won’t be going out on loan this season, writes Duncan Castles of the Sunday Times.

The centre-back will instead be allowed to remain at Anfield and fight for his place in the team – something which, judging by yesterday’s performance against West Ham – shouldn’t be overly difficult.

Martin Skrtel, Dejan Lovren, Mamadou Sakho and Kolo Toure are all currently ahead of him in the pecking order but his performances at the European Under-21 Championships this summer have proven his qualities to us all.

The 22-year-old, who was signed by Brendan Rodgers in the summer of 2013, is yet to experience first-team football in a Liverpool shirt. He’s spent the last two seasons on loan at Granada and Bordeaux but failed to make much of an impression on either occasion.

He returned to action with our Under-21 side earlier this month, playing the first 45 minutes of our mini-Merseyside derby draw with Everton, a game which we were leading 3-1 when he was withdrawn.

Many Liverpool fans seem to be impressed by the little they’ve seen from him, so let’s hope that he does finally get his chance over the weeks and months to come, be that in the Europa League or elsewhere.
