Liverpool offered to sell Alberto Moreno on deadline day, says dodgy report

The Daily Express are today claiming that Liverpool came close to selling left-back Alberto Moreno on transfer deadline day – after offering Real Madrid the chance to sign the defender, only to be turned down.

Despite coming from a somewhat dubious source, this news is likely to provoke further rage from a set of fans who are already unhappy with our deadline day business, which also included allowing Tiago Ilori to leave on loan.

With Jose Enrique having been banished from the first-team picture, Moreno is the only recognised left-back in our squad – with Joe Gomez predominately a centre-half, despite his relative success in the position so far this season.

It therefore seems incredible to believe that Brendan Rodgers and co would be actively looking to sell the Spaniard, particularly after his efforts as an impact player featuring on the left of midfielder over the last couple of games.

However, when Madrid allowed Fabio Coentrao to join Monaco on loan, it was widely suggested that Moreno could be his replacement – only for the Express to tell us that Real boss Rafa Benitez decided that he didn’t want him.

Moreno, 23, signed for us from Sevilla last summer and endured a mixed first season on Merseyside. But even so, very few people would begrudge the young Spaniard a second chance to establish himself over the present campaign.

Let’s hope that he now gets it and doesn’t just become another Rodgers signing on the scrapheap.
