Loyal Lucas ‘loves Liverpool’ – Brazilian speaks about nearly leaving this summer

Lucas really is a fantastic model-pro.

The defensive midfielder has been with us for eight years, but his stint on Merseyside nearly came to its end this summer – with Besiktas very close to signing the player on loan (via Sky Sports).

We ended up deciding to keep the long-serving Brazilian though, and he played in our past two Premier League matches.

“It’s been very intense [the window], to be honest,” he told Liverpoolfc.com.

“I think the last couple of years, every transfer window my name is [linked with a move].

“Of course there are times when you think you might have to move on and I was very close to moving but one thing I will always have is commitment to this club.

“I’ve been here so long and I always said if I had the choice to be here and be happy, I would always choose Liverpool.

“When your future is in doubt, you might have to think of another solution, but I’m happy that it didn’t happen and I’m here to fight for the club as I have been doing for eight years.

“I’m just looking forward to a good season and putting Liverpool back where it belongs. I have this chance to say I’m fully committed.

“I’ve been here so long and I really love this club, I just need to now focus on my performance and help in the way the manager and the staff asked me to help.

“Hopefully, I’ll be an important player for the club this season.”

It’s clear that Liverpool has become a part of Lucas’s life, just like it has all of ours, and regardless of your thoughts of him as a player – you can’t help but be impressed with his continual commitment to the club.

It’s important for Brendan Rodgers to use him properly this summer. Away from home against better clubs, like the fixture away to Manchester United at the weekend, he certainly has a role to play. No other player is as disciplined in the anchorman spot – the the South American does put in countless tackles and interceptions.

With Jordan Henderson a doubt for the weekend, Lucas will play a vital role if we’re to collect any points from Old Trafford.
