Gerrard fears that Philippe Coutinho may be next to leave Liverpool

Steven Gerrard fears that our Brazilian magician Philippe Coutinho could be the next player the two Spanish giants – Real Madrid and Barcelona – focus their attentions on, The Evening Standard reports.

Gerrard’s upcoming autobiography has led to a plethora of explosive stories regarding our former skipper circulating in the press and it seems as though there isn’t a single subject he’s been reluctant to cover.

Gerrard has seen a number of players come and go during his time at Anfield and while he admits that Coutinho is now our ‘main man’, he fears that his performances will attract the attention of Barcelona and Real Madrid – something Coutinho may find hard to turn down.

“Philippe is wonderfully gifted and I expect him to become Liverpool’s leading player,” Gerrard was quoted as saying in the publication.

“But I also know that Spanish giants, Barcelona and Real Madrid, will come looking for Philippe in a few season, just like they did with Luis [Suarez].

“And that’s when it gets tricky for Liverpool because the lure to go to one of those two clubs is so strong for any South American or Spanish players.”

Coutinho is one of the most promising players in Europe and his performances for Liverpool will inevitably make many clubs stand up and take notice.

However, he’s recently signed a new long-term contract and we shouldn’t be looking to entertain any offers for our prized asset.

If that blue mob down the road can keep hold of John Stones despite the relentless pressure from Chelsea, we should be certainly be able to keep our best players too.
