Joe Gomez has been arguably the surprise of the season so far, with the teen sensation defying the odds and forcing his way into the starting XI. His former Charlton teammate Roger Johnson has given the young star his backing, and is fully confident Gomez will be a full fledged England international in no time, as reported by Sky Sports.
Gomez looked like one for the future when he arrived from Charlton this past summer, but he has been absolutely phenomenal in the opening weeks of the campaign and deserves his spot in the team.
He is a talented, versatile, and physically impressive youngster, and has a hugely bright career ahead of him – for both club and country.
His veteran ex-teammate Johnson has lavished praise on Gomez following his move, and believes it’s only a matter of time before he turns out for England.
“Obviously he still needs to learn his trade but he’ll learn that through playing more games,” Johnson said.
“He’ll make mistakes – that’s part and parcel of the game – but as long as he listens to the people around him, who have had a fair bit of experience, he won’t go too far wrong because he has all the natural attributes.
“He is a great player for his age. He’s strong, quick, athletic. As the years go on I expect him to go on and become a full international and I just hope he keeps performing well enough to stay in that team and get another good season under his belt.”
At 18-years-old, Gomez obviously still has a huge amount to learn. He has shown inexperience at times this season, but that is to be expected. He will only improve under the tutelage of the manager and our more experienced players, and it’s already looking like we’ve got one of the gems of English football on our hands.
Whether utilised at left-back, centre-back, or right-back, Gomez is surely in line for an England call up at some point – despite his tender years. It would arguably be better for us if the call were to come later, as we don’t want to burn him out, but any international experience would obviously help him grow.
