Gary McAllister discusses Roberto Firmino’s injury – Good news, Liverpool fans

Hopefully it seems like Roberto Firmino’s injury isn’t too bad, according to Assistant Manager Gary McAllister.

Our Brazilian summer signing, who cost a fee which could rise to £29m, was taken off after 35 minutes and replaced by Divock Origi, after he failed to run off a back problem brought on by an awkward fall.

“It was just a ball he went up for and he’s landed on the base of his spine, just on his lower back. It’s an awkward landing but he seems fine as well,” McAllister told reported in the press conference.

Firmino showed touches of class, but the fact he had to be taken off when given a start at summed up his difficult start to life on Merseyside. He’s yet to score or assist a goal despite arriving from Germany with a huge reputation, and this injury won’t do his chances of finding his feet any help.

The quality is undeniably there though. Firmino IS a fantastic player, he’s just struggling to adapt, made worse by the fact he’s being used on the right more often than not. Hopefully McAllister’s comments indicate that he could be available for the weekend clash with Aston Villa.

If he does prove a longer term absence, Adam Lallana and Jordon Ibe really need to start contributing more effectively in the final third.
