Oliver Kay from the Times is a reliable, well respected journalist, and has today backed up claims that FSG are not interested in Jurgen Klopp during a webchat.
Last week Graham Beecroft of talkSPORT was adamant on the situation, saying, “One thing I can tell you is that Jurgen Klopp will not be the next Liverpool manager,” so despite the calls for the Borussia Dortmund manager to replace Brendan Rodgers by many fans, our owners don’t share the same views.
“FSG do seem a little worried about appointing a forceful personality,” Kay said.
This quote in itself is a little strange, as surely every manager of an elite club has a forceful personality, almost as part of the job description. Let’s take a look at the managers to have won the Premier League this century: Sir Alex Ferguson, Arsene Wenger, Jose Mourinho, Carlo Ancelotti, Roberto Mancini and Manuel Pellegrini. Perhaps only the Chilean could be described as somebody without a properly forceful personality, and we’re sure he’s harder and more self assured than he gives off in press conferences.
Klopp is likeable, but has his own ideas – and they’ve worked in the past – so regardless of our feelings on the current manager – it seems untenable that Klopp wouldn’t even be considered should the position arise. But even Tony Barrett, also from the Times, reckons it’s not happening:
“If Liverpool do decide to make a change, then they should talk to Klopp at the very least. John Henry was an admirer when he took over. The suggestions are that Liverpool wouldn’t pursue Klopp if Rodgers does go. I can’t work it out as it smacks of arrogance. Klopp is willing to talk to Liverpool, a club which has finished outside of top 4 in 5 of last 6 seasons. It’s not as if Liverpool will have their pick of elite managers,” he said last week.
But what’s important is this – Liverpool fans must support the current manager and focus on the team’s important run of fixtures.
We’re reporting the news that is breaking, but would prefer not to write about other managers when Rodgers is doing everything he can to turn the situation around.
This will of course be easier with two wins before the international break, versus FC Sion and then Everton.
