FSG appointed Jurgen Klopp to help lure big names to Liverpool [The Times]

One of tenfold reasons Liverpool appointed Jurgen Klopp as manager is his ability to attract world-class players to the club, says Tony Barrett in the Times.

The Merseyside journalist reckons that Klopp’s name and reputation around the footballing world will help draw superstars to Anfield. Unfortunately, Brendan Rodgers’ lure did not, and although he splashed nearly £300m during his tenure at the helm, he never signed a player of established top level class – bar perhaps Mario Balotelli – ironically.

Of course the Italian flopped, and even mega money signings such as Christian Benteke and Roberto Firmino are nowhere near the finished article.

Klopp gave interviews and press conferences this morning and came across superbly, uniting Liverpool fans who’d split towards the end of Rodgers’ reign.

Naturally, our new German boss didn’t answer any questions on potential transfers directly, but did indicate that the transfer committee would remain, providing he has first and last say on signings.

“”It’s enough for me to have the first and last word. This is a really crazy discussion because it was not a problem for (even) 10 seconds,” said Klopp, reported in the Echo. “We talked about it before … for me it’s enough.

“We only want to discuss about very good players and discussing on the highest level and I hope that’s what we do.

“I’m not a genius, I don’t know more than the rest of the world. I need these people.

“When we sign or sell a player, it’s really easy to handle this.”

Of course, transfer talk is largely irrelevant now considering Klopp has yet to meet and evaluate his squad. He’s a manager who loves to develop and improve players, so with the talent already at Liverpool, he’ll choose to hone the skills of his current batch rather than focus on targets early on.
