Joe Gomez injured on international duty

In what was mainly a positive international break for Liverpool players, there was some bad news last night as our starlet defender Joe Gomez hobbled off for England Under-21s verses Kazakhstan, the official website confirm.

There’s no news as to the extent of Gomez’s injury, who was substituted with ten minutes to go for Gareth Southgate’s outfit. Jordon Ibe played just over an hour, but failed to properly make an impact.

Elsewhere, Joe Allen took part in the Welsh qualification parade at Cardiff against Andorra, while our Belgian duo Simon Mignolet and Divock Origi helped them top Wales’s group.

It’s disappointing news for Gomez who’s really hit the ground running since his summer switch from Charlton. He lost his place in the side towards the end of Brendan Rodgers’ tenure – but with Jurgen Klopp favouring ball playing centre-backs – there’s high hopes that Gomez will develop well under his tutelage.

Gomez is very composed on the ball and can stride from defence, akin to Mats Hummels at Borussia Dortmund. If he can reach anywhere near the heights Klopp helped the German manage, Liverpool will have one of the country’s best defenders on our hands.
