Ilkay Gundogan responds to Liverpool transfer rumours

It was nice to dream about the legions of world-class ex-Klopp players who’d swarm to Liverpool upon our new managerial appointment, but a dream, sadly, appears all it will be for now.

Ilkay Gundogan, the superb Borussia Dortmund midfield dynamo Klopp signed form FC Nürnberg in 2011, has quashed tame reports of him linking up at Anfield with our new boss.

“This is an issue that is always floating around,” Gundogan said at a sponsor’s event in Dortmund, cited in Goal.

“I am very happy with BVB and feel very comfortable here. Of course, I can imagine remaining here beyond the end of the season.”

In fairness, even if a transfer was on the cards, it would be unprofessional for a player to say anything else, especially outside of a transfer window.

And it’s it important that Liverpool fans focus on what Klopp can do with the current bunch, rather than imagine fantastical new January signings. If he doesn’t get the existent squad playing, it’ll be largely irrelevant who we target during the winter in terms of this season as our hopes of a top four finish may already be buried.

In Emre Can, Lucas, James Milner and a soon to be fit Jordan Henderson we have talent centrally. The players possess the work ethic Klopp requires and they’ll need to show him courage, passion and an ability to transition from defence to attack instantaneously.

In the long run, Gundogan is the kind of player we should definitely be targeting, but perhaps that’s more of an issue for next summer.
