Liverpool’s potential Europa League opponents… Many big sides await Reds

Posted by

Liverpool’s draw against FC Sion last night won them Europa League Group B, and earned them a theoretically easier draw in the Last 32 of the competition.

But when you look at the sides we could face and the teams we’ll miss out on due to the seedings, it’s actually not made much difference at all.

We can be drawn against any of the sides that finished 2nd in their Europa League group, including Marseille, Fiorentina, Villarreal and Jurgen Klopp’s former side Borussia Dortmund, while the four 3rd placed Champions League sides with the lowest points are also unseeded. These include Valencia and consecutive holders Sevilla.

Europa League 2nd placed teams: Fenerbahce, Borussia Dortmund, FC Midtjylland, Villarreal, Marseille, St Etienne, Sporting, Fiorentina, Anderlecht, Sparta Prague, FC Augsburg

Four possible Champions League exiting opponents: Valencia, Shakhtar Donetsk, Galatasaray and Sevilla.

Interestingly, the list of teams that won their Europa League Groups and are seeded, along with us, look like potentially easier fixtures!

Molde, Krasnodar, Napoli, Rapid Vienna, Braga, Lazio, Lokomotiv Moscow, Basel, Tottenham, Schalke and Athletic Bilbao

Of the possible sides Liverpool could face, Sparta Prague, FC Midtjylland and Augsburg look the most appealing, while the three Spanish sides – Valencia, Sevilla and Villarreal would be best avoided.

The romantic possibility of a tie with Dortmund would be fantastic, despite the fact we’d probably be underdogs. It’ll be great for Marco Reus to come and check out Anfield ahead of next season anyway…
