Ian Ayre flies to Europe to finalise Jurgen Klopp’s first transfer deal

Liverpool CEO Ian Ayre has flown to Serbia to wrap up the deal to bring Marko Grujic to Anfield, the Echo reports.

We’ve agreed to part with around £5m for the 19-year-old midfielder, who currently plies his trade for Serbia’s best team Red Star Belgrade.

Liverpool will complete the deal now, but Grujic will stay on with Red Star Belgrade until the end of the season before joining us in the summer, says the story.

Yesterday, Grujic posted an article declaring him a Liverpool player on his Facebook page, along with two suggestive ‘smileys’.

According to the Echo, Jurgen Klopp actively helped persuade Grujic to sign for Liverpool ahead of Inter Milan and Chelsea who were also circling.

Our Serbian assistant manager Zeljko Buvac alerted the club to Grujic’s talents, and it now remains to be seen whether the goalscoring midfielder can fulfil his potential on Merseyside.

Two other Serbians to represent Liverpool, Milan Jovanovic and Lazar Markovic have so far failed, although the latter may get the opportunity when he returns from his loan spell at Fenerbahce.

It might be good to ease Grujic’s transition to have Markovic at the club as well.
