Watford Loss Highlights Liverpool’s Problems

Liverpool’s defeat to Watford was a disappointing and sobering defeat for supporters. To lose 3-0 to a team that has just returned to top-flight football is not good enough for a team like Liverpool but the defeat and performance has become painfully familiar of recent seasons for Reds’ supporters.

Jurgen Klopp was the manager every Liverpool supporter wanted but he doesn’t have a magic wand, although some recent performances and results had fans dreaming. Emphatic wins over Chelsea, Manchester City and Southampton excited everyone connected to Liverpool but the last couple of weeks has brought everyone back to earth with a bump and a reality check as to where Liverpool are at.

Klopp has galvanised everyone at Anfield and you can see a big difference in the players’ commitment and enthusiasm during games, and after recording such stunning victories there was even talk of Liverpool winning the Premier League but the defeat to Newcastle was a sobering one before a last minute goal salvaged a point at home to West Brom, but the defeat to Watford proved that Liverpool and Klopp have much improving to do before they can mount a challenge for the title.

Liverpool’s deficiencies were exposed by Watford on Sunday and although Klopp is one of the best coaches around he needs time to change this average squad that he has inherited.

Liverpool don’t have a good enough goalkeeper in Simon Mignolet and his deputy Adam Bogdan looks even more dodgy after his display on Sunday.

Liverpool don’t have cover for their full-backs and they have big problems in central defence with neither central defensive partnership looking solid enough since the days of Carragher and Hyypia.

Liverpool are weak in midfield with no physical presence and not enough creativity with too much reliance on Coutinho. Emre Can has potential to be a top midfielder but he needs time, Adam Lallana is running out of time, he has nice touches and has skill but he fails to deliver an end product and is too slow and weak.

Firmino has played one good game since joining Liverpool and for the money spent on the Brazilian we should be seeing more from him.

Benteke just looks like another Balotelli, with very little movement and unless he plays alongside a strike-partner he doesn’t look like fitting into Liverpool’s style of play.

Sturridge is the only striker Liverpool can rely on for goals but unfortunately can’t rely on him staying fit.

This current squad of players will provide Liverpool supporters with the odd performance like we witnessed at Manchester City and Southampton but supporters will also have to suffer more like we saw at Watford.

Liverpool are too easily bullied out of games with a lack of physical presence in the team and when they play against big physical teams they struggle because at the moment the Reds have so many small players that are knocked out of games and although Liverpool have some good footballers the struggle when teams play a pressing game against them.

Klopp needs time to bring in his own players and supporters must be patient until he does.
