Leicester Win Means Nothing Unless Reds Beat Sunderland

Liverpool earned a much needed victory over Premier League leaders Leicester on Boxing Day, and the win was welcomed after a couple of difficult weeks for new manager Jurgen Klopp.

After impressive wins over Manchester City and Southampton, the Reds suffered a surprise and disappointing defeat at Newcastle before struggling to a 2-2 draw at home to West Brom a week later thanks to a last minute Origi goal.

A 3-0 hammering at newly-promoted Watford warranted a response from Klopp against Leicester and he got that with a 1-0 win. Liverpool were the first team this season to stop the Premier League’s surprise package from scoring this season and they thoroughly deserved the victory.

Liverpool produced a whole-hearted and committed performance full of energy and although they never created too much in terms of goalscoring opportunities they did have most of the game’s possession and nullified the dangerous threat of Leicester’s counter-attack led by Vardy and Mahrez.

Liverpool’s makeshift centre-back pairing of Lovren and Sakho impressed against such a potent strike-force and Christian Benteke silenced most of his critics with the match-winning goal after replacing the injured Origi.

Emre Can and Jordan Henderson produced a strong performance and with Coutinho and Lallana the Reds are capable of creating chances.

The win over Leicester was a confidence-boosting win but it will mean nothing if they lose to second bottom Sunderland. Liverpool have an unwanted habit of beating the league’s top teams and dropping points against the league’s strugglers, and they must improve this record if they want to achieve their goal of finishing the season in the top four.
