Liverpool in advanced talks with young Polish goalkeeper

The normally-reliable Liverpool Echo has reported that we’re in the advanced stages of wrapping up a deal for 16-year-old Poland youth international goalkeeper Kamil Grabara.

The youngster, who currently plies his trade for Polish Ekstraklasa (Premier League) side Ruch Chorzow, will go straight into the Kirkby Academy and will not train with the first team at Melwood.

Ruch Chorzow’s club president Dariusz Smagorowicz said “Grabara has been with us for 12 years. A few months ago we signed a contract with him to keep him until 2018, but now Liverpool want to have him”.

The Echo claims that reports in Poland had also linked him with both Man United and Man City, but it is unclear if those rumours emanate from a reliable source.

He is expected to travel to Merseyside later this week for a medical.

If and when Grabara eventually makes his first team debut, he will be following in famous footsteps. Polish international Jerzy Dudek became a Kop legend in 2005 after his Istanbul heroics before eventually leaving the club for Real Madrid in 2007.

Is this the right approach for us to be taking? Of course, our goalkeeping issues are well-documented and it’s undoubtedly important to keep the academy full of quality young talent, but is there really not one teenager in the entire North-West region that has equivalent talent to Grabera?

If we do sign him, is there even an argument that he should be our number two instead of Bogdan, despite his tender years? The likes of Casillas, Courtois, and De Gea all made a splash at a young age, but it’s impossible to do that from Kirkby instead of Melwood.
