‘Looks like Subotic could happen,’ confirms BBC journalist on Liverpool links

Various transfer rumours are raging right now, but they become even more difficult to ignore when they’re discussed by reputable sources of respected journalists.

BBC Sport’s Matt Smith counts as one of the latter, and he thinks Liverpool ‘could’ sign Borussia Dortmund centre-half Neven Subotic this January – but perhaps not via the loan deal previously mooted.

Subotic is 27-years-old and should be entering his defensive prime, but has not reached the levels this term that he once managed under Klopp’s Dortmund leadership.

As a result, he’s out of the side under Thomas Tuchel and the Mirror reported yesterday that a loan deal was in discussion.

Smith thinks BVB would favour a permanent transfer, but it’d perhaps be better for us to just acquire him until the summer, see if he cuts the mustard, and then sign him properly if he does.

It’s try before you buy.

What is sure is this: with Martin Skrtel, Mamadou Sakho, Dejan Lovren, Kolo Toure and Joe Gomez all injured, we desperately need to enter the transfer market for central defensive reinforcements.

Subotic would be a welcome addition. Let’s hope it get done quickly.
