Raphael Honigstein on Götze to Liverpool: ‘Serious – could well happen in summer’

Wow.

This one looks like it’s going to blow!

When we saw the Mario Götze to Liverpool transfer rumours late last night we took them with as big a pinch a salt as you can expect, despite getting that giddy feeling in our bellies.

We thought we’d leave it alone until seeing that German publication Bild had actually splashed the story on their back page – claiming sources had confirmed to them that a €50m summer move was very much on the cards.

And now the reputable, respected Bundesliga expert Raphael Honigstein has openly backed the possibility of the switch.

Honigstein is regularly seen on ESPN and BT Sport and writes for a number of broadsheet publications.

Bundesliga journalist and ex-Premier League star Jan Aage Fjortfoft also backed up the potential links, which sent Liverpool fans on Twitter into overdrive.

Liverpool need an injection of goals into the squad, and Gotze has pedigree having scored the winning one in the 2014 World Cup final…

Klopp developed him into a superstar during his stint at Borussia Dortmund, and the pair split on very good terms when the 23-year-old chose to join Bayern Munich – where he actually hasn’t maximised his potential.

The €50m, or £37m, seems reasonable in this day and age. We can only sit tight and wait for further developments, although you can be sure Klopp will dismiss any questions on the subject with more pressing football and injury matters his current concern.
