Liverpool make approach for €60m Serie A striker, but are rebuffed – claims Gazzetta

If this story from giant Italian publication Gazzetta is to be believed, Liverpool are at least considering big name transfer targets after so far only signing Marko Grujic and Steven Caulker in this transfer window.

The source claims that Liverpool are willing to spend huge money on Juventus striker Alvaro Morata, as much as €60m, but importantly – The Old Lady are not interested in selling.

This is despite the fact that Morata is actually below Mario Mandzukic and Paulo Dybala in the pecking order, with the young Argentine especially proving a wonderful summer acquisition.

Gazzetta claim that even if Juve could sign Edinson Cavani from PSG, they’d still be loathe to lose Morata, the young Spaniard they acquired from Real Madrid.

Sport Witness do some translation work for us as well, explaining that according to Gazzetta, Liverpool have made their approach via intermediaries, but that Juve are just not interested in doing business.

For us, parts of this rumour just don’t make sense.

While our reported interest in a Champions League forward struggling for minutes seems creditable, the mooted price-tag seems farcical.

Morata has scored just one goal in Serie A this term, and only two more altogether in Europe. If Liverpool really did make an offer which translates as £45m, Juventus would be running all the way to the bank.

There’s no way they’re rejecting that kind of money for an impact substitute, surely?
