Jurgen Klopp turned down European giants before Liverpool, ex-president confirms

We’re pretty lucky to have Jurgen Klopp in charge, Reds.

In fact, we’re very lucky – as our manager turned down a direct offer from ten time European champions Real Madrid – arguably the biggest club in the world – back in the summer.

He of course accepted our offer in October after Liverpool fired Brendan Rodgers instead.

These are the claims of former Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon, who states that Rafa Benitez’s Bernabeu sacking was inevitable – as they never really wanted him in the first place.

“Benitez was a coach who was already a dead man walking from the start at Real Madrid,” he explained in an interview with Omnisport, reported in the Daily Mail.

“That’s because he was not the chosen one, he was the fourth option. They tried to bring [Jose] Mourinho but the Portuguese did not want to go back.

“After that they tried to get Joachim Low, and he didn’t want to come either. The third person they tried to get was [Jurgen] Klopp, and the German also rejected.

“So the last option was Rafa Benitez. They brought him in even though he didn’t suit Real Madrid’s style.”

Klopp decided to leave Borussia Dortmund last summer following seven years in charge, which included two Bundesliga wins and a Champions League final.

Naturally, there was a scramble for his services, but despite our lack of Champions League football and a squad in need of improvement, Klopp signed for us!

And we’re certainly enjoying the ride, and the vision he’s got for the club and the team.
