Liverpool player ratings v Sunderland: Roberto Firmino best, Mignolet blunders again

Liverpool stupidly threw away a lead against Sunderland today, and the mismatched player ratings reflect the events that unfolded.

GK) Simon Mignolet – 5/10

Beaten at his near post for Sunderland’s first. Should have kept out Johnson’s free-kick which means his mistake effectively cost us the game. Despite the five year contract, there’s just no way he’s good enough not to be replaced in the summer.

DR) Nathaniel Clyne – 6/10

Didn’t do much wrong, but didn’t do much good either. A fairly typical performance from Clyne, in truth.

DL) Alberto Moreno – 6/10

Always in the Sunderland half, Moreno’s end product was poor. On more than one occasion he had the ball at the byline after impressive work but couldn’t find a team-mate.

DC) Dejan Lovren – n/a

Limped off after 11 minutes and there is as of yet no word about what kind of injury the Croat’s picked up. Worrying.

DC) Mamadou Sakho – 5/10

Turned so easily for Defoe’s equaliser. Now Lovren and Skrtel are injured it’s imperative Sakho improves. His form from before Christmas seems a distant memory.

DMC) Emre Can – 6/10

Saw an awful lot of the ball and ticked us over in midfield, making a few successful tackles to boot. Currently lacking ideas when in the opposition half though.

MC) Jordan Henderson – 5/10

Another largely nothing display from Henderson, who’s out of form right now. The captain tried longer, pinged deliveries when we needed shorter ones into feet and his shots were wayward.

MC) Joe Allen – 7/10

Did well as a no.10 in the first-half, playing some nice, clever passes in the final third.

AMR) James Milner – 6/10

Passed the ball horribly, barely completing half of them in the first-half. He did however produce the game’s first moment of quality, putting in a delicious cross for Firmino, which earns him a 6.

AML) Adam Lallana – 7/10

Scored a goal, something he’s often criticised for not doing, which is why he gets a 7/10. He needs to continue entering the box late – it works.

FC) Roberto Firmino – 8/10

Scored our opener with a clever header at the back post and assisted Lallana’s goal excellently as well following a brilliant tackle and run. With Sturridge and Coutinho out, he’s easily our best player.

SUBS:

Kolo Toure – 6/10 – Didn’t command the back-line. We’d prefer Steven Caulker got a chance.

Jordon Ibe – 6/10 – Some good running, some good moments and a sharp spot. So, so.

Lucas – n/a
