Klopp reacts to Anfield walkout – claims it’s now “my problem as well”

Jurgen Klopp gave his pre-match press-conference before tomorrow evening’s FA Cup Replay today, despite undergoing surgery for appendicitis just two days ago.

The Liverpool boss has recovered quickly and will be back on the touchline for the trip to West Ham.

(If only his players were so quick off the treatment table!)

Klopp though looked disgruntled, and not because of his illness, but because of the Anfield walkout after 77 minutes of the home tie with Sunderland at the weekend.

10,000 fans streamed out of the ground with Liverpool 2-0 up, only for the side to concede two stupid goals and draw the game.

“It’s not too easy for me. I heard about it of course, but I’ve had a lot of things to do in the past few weeks. Now I know it’s my problem too. Anything I’d say now would make it more complicated. I have to collect more information,” Klopp said, reported in the Echo.

“It’s in the interest of the club to find a solution for this.

“It’s not what we want. We want fans to stay until the game is finished. That’s it, that’s all I can say about this. When I heard it I was disappointed.”

Earlier in the season, Klopp criticised fans for leaving the ground early – but that wasn’t as a protest – just various individual reasons (likely transport).

Since, supporters have stayed until the bitter end in the vast majority, and the walkout on Saturday had nothing to do with Klopp or his players.

Klopp’s a man of the people, and will surely privately back the protest having managed in Germany where season tickets cost a minimal sum. Publicly of course he cannot speak out against his employers FSG, but it will be interesting to see how much leverage he has in ongoing discussions.
