Ticket price protest to be discussed in the House of Commons

Those who thought the Liverpool fans’ ticket price protest at the weekend would fall on deaf ears were sorely mistaken.

Amid talk of FSG and the club potentially being willing to revisit some aspects of the policy after the walkout, news has now come through that the crisis will be discussed by MPs in the Houses of Parliament.

John Pugh, a Lib Dem MP in the constituency of Southport, has reportedly tabled an Early Day Motion in support of fans (via Echo).

The motion reads as follows:

“This house supports the protests made by Liverpool Football Club supporters in response to ticket prices showing little regard to or respect for the club’s loyal fanbase, recognises that football clubs are not simply large businesses intent on maximising shareholder value but are part of the life and soul of their community and urges honourable members to seek further engagement with all stakeholders including supporters groups across the land to see what can be done to prevent professional football outcomes being entirely determined by money and economic interest.”

It is thought Steve Rotherham (MP for Walton) and Alison McGovern (MP for Wirral South) have already agreed with the motion. Pugh hopes more MPs “will follow suit” in the coming days.

“Football clubs like Liverpool should be the life and soul of their community,” he said. “The increasingly corporate nature of the sport has come at the detriment of supporters who are being priced out of the game.”
