Luis Suarez recalls infamous Crystal Palace loss: “That hurt so much”

May 5th, 2014. A date that all of us wish we didn’t remember, but simply cannot forget.

We lead Crystal Palace 3-0 at Selhurst Park, where victory will take us three points clear of Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table with only one game of the season remaining.

But a long-range strike from Damien Delaney and a double from substitute Dwight Gayle, all in the final 11 minutes, see Palace make an unlikely comeback and us gift the title to eventual winners City.

I was crying, and so at full time was Luis Suarez, who recalled the pain of that night in a compelling and insightful interview with former Liverpool teammate Jamie Carragher for the Daily Mail.

As the above picture shows, the now-Barcelona striker lifted his shirt to hide his tears.

Suarez, who scored our third goal, told the Daily Mail: “That hurt. That hurt so much. We were so desperate to win it. I knew we had a unique opportunity and we were playing so well.

“It was that desire to get more goals against Crystal Palace that let them back into it and killed us. I knew when we drew that game the league was lost. Everyone was sick.”

Palace have made a habit of gatecrashing Liverpool parties in recent times. They ruined Steven Gerrard’s Anfield farewell and inflicted a first Reds defeat on Jurgen Klopp in November.

Let’s take some revenge when we visit Selhurst Park next month – for Luis and the rest of us cryers!
