Henderson given bizarre present by Augsburg’s captain

We’ve all heard of exchanging pendants before kick-off and shirts at full-time (or, increasingly, at half-time!) – – but what about exchanging cats?!

Ok, not we’re not talking about living and breathing real cats, but rather a puppet version of a cat…

Our captain Jordan Henderson was presented with the gift by Augsburg skipper Paul Verhaegh ahead of our last-32 tie in Germany on Thursday (via Echo). The cat’s name is reportedly “Mikesch”.

It certainly sounds odd, but there is actually a good reason for the gift.

Augsburg is famous in Germany for its puppet theatre shows, and even went as far as showing ‘Punch and Judy’ on the big in-stadium screens as the players were warming up. In recent years, it has become a tradition for the Augsburg captain to present a puppet cat the the opposition’s captain – normally one which is wearing a red, green and white scarf.

Makes sense, but still – German humour, eh?
