Divock Origi plays an hour for U21s in preparation for big cup double header

Divock Origi enjoyed an hour-long run out for Liverpool’s U21s this afternoon as they suffered a 2-0 defeat to Sunderland.

The Belgian continued his comeback from injury with 60 minutes which will do him good ahead of our big cup double header.

This was Origi’s first start since he returned from a six-week layoff earlier this month, having undergone surgery on a knee problem.

He has made substitute appearances against West Ham United and Augsburg, and scored off the bench in the 6-0 rout of Aston Villa.

Another start could await the 20-year-old in Thursday’s return leg against the German opposition in the last 32 of the Europa League.

Origi is unlikely to be in the frame for the Capital One Cup final team, with Daniel Sturridge or Roberto Firmino in line to start up top.

Joao Teixeira, Brad Smith, Danny Ward and Sheyi Ojo also featured against Sunderland on a weekend which the first XI had no game.

Second-half goals from Mikael Mandron and Carl Lawson secured victory for a young Black Cats side who are second only to Manchester United in the U21 table.
