Guardian report names three priority Liverpool summer targets

Yesterday, various outlets (including the respectable Liverpool journalists), broke news that Jurgen Klopp would be armed with a hefty summer transfer budget to improve his current squad.

The Guardian reported that due to the £297m sitting in the club’s coffers, an increase of 16% on the last financial year, the new manager will be trusted to seek out new, exciting targets.

Klopp has so far confirmed a deal for Marko Grujic of Red Star Belgrade and Schalke’s Joel Matip, but plenty more additions are expected as well as a number of players exiting the club.

Their article claims Christian Benteke, Mario Balotelli, Joe Allen, Kolo Touré, José Enrique and João Teixeira will all be either sold or released, while Bayern Munich’s Mario Gotze, Leicester City’s Ben Chilwell and Udinese’s Piotr Zielinski are three key targets.

Gotze, the scorer of the winning goal in the 2014 World Cup final, would be a tremendously exciting signing, although his acquisition would rely on Bayern’s incoming manager Carlo Ancelotti deeming him surplus to requirements.

Chilwell is a talented teenager, but would not be considered an upgrade on Alberto Moreno, Jon Flanagan or even Brad Smith yet.

Zielinski is enjoying a strong Serie A season, but again – wouldn’t be the automatic midfield upgrade many supporters are crying out for. He’s scored three goals and assisted four more this term, good stats for a 21-year-old – but most Reds would prefer Liverpool went for Granit Xhaka or Ilkay Gundogan.
