With only 20 seconds of injury time left, the striker, who’d come off the bench, raced into the penalty area and went down following a challenge by Damien Delaney.

A spot-kick was given which Benteke converted, only for initial replays to suggest contact was minimal.

A smiling Benteke, alongside Man of the Match Dejan Lovren, wasn’t too fussed about it in the post-match interview.

“I think he definitely touched me. I don’t go down otherwise. The referee knows better than us and he made the right decision,” said the Belgian forward – scoring his first goal in over 700 minutes of football.

Lovren, excellent again, thinks the win will propel us into our key Europa League double header with Manchester United.

“Especially after the game against Manchester City, this is a big lift up for everyone one of us. We will have a tough game on Thursday, but it’s a good thing for our confidence,” he said.
