If there’s one set of fans in world football who can rival Anfield’s rendition of You’ll Never Walk Alone, it’s our German friends at Borussia Dortmund.
And this weekend just gone they again proved this to be the case, honouring a fan who sadly died of a heart attack midway through the match.

Dortmund won 2-0 against Mainz but the scoreline was an afterthought as the entire ground, including the away fans, united to sing for the supporter who passed away.

A Borussia Dortmund fan died tragically of a heart attack in the middle of their game today and over 80,000 supporters paid their respects by singing ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’. There are more important things than football. Rest in peace.

Borussia Dortmund presicent Reinhard Rauball narrated the events after the game, reported by the Guardian.
“We were informed pretty quickly in the stands of what had happened. From that moment on the game fell right into the background. I could no longer concentrate on it. The fans’ reaction was spontaneous. I’ve never experienced anything like it,” he began.
“I can only pay a huge compliment to all of the fans for the way in which they expressed their sorrow and respect in this way, in a unified manner. I take my hat off to the Mainz fans who, without exception, joined us in mourning and stopped supporting their team.
“The scarves held in the air when You’ll Never Walk Alone was sung has my utmost respect. It shows how deeply rooted honour and respect of each other exists and can be expressed in such a short period of time, and I can only take my hat off to that.”
It’s this kind of event which reminds us of the power football has to do good.
We respect Jurgen Klopps former club Borussia Dortmund enormously, and a Europa League tie with them this season would be a wonderful occasion.
