Klopp explains why Flanagan’s getting new deal – ‘It’s good for us, but it’s better for Flanno’

Jon Flanagan is on the verge of signing a new three year Liverpool contract, and today Jurgen Klopp explained to the official website why the club’s made the decision to renew the fullback’s deal.

The 23-year-old defender was set to be out of contract this summer, but thankfully Liverpool have moved in time to secure his future.

Our manager told supporters that the decision to keep Flanagan around was largely his, and explained his reasons as to why.

“I was a little bit involved in these negotiations and we are all happy, especially for Flanno,” Klopp began.

“It’s good for us but, I think in this special case with his long-term injury, it’s better for Flanno. Of course, there are a few other full-backs in the world but not so many Scousers and not so many [who] came back after this difficult injury. As I said a few weeks ago, he’s our boy and we are really happy to have him here.

“I’m not involved in the negotiations about numbers. I don’t sit together with the player and say ‘no that’s too much’ or something like this but I was involved in the decision that we would offer him a new contract and which kind of contract.”

While Klopp’s right in suggesting Flanagan’s locality and the fact he was brought up through the academy plays a part, he underplays Flanagan’s ability as a footballer.

Against Manchester City and Crystal Palace in the Premier League recently, Flanagan’s barely put a foot wrong, and set the tone for our combative, battling displays.

He doesn’t offer much offensively, but is capable of shoring up one side of the field defensively with sensible positioning and hard tackling.

It’s great that Flanagan will be with us for the next three years at least, and hopefully longer.
