Benteke withdraws from Belgium squad with knee injury

It had to happen, didn’t it?

After earlier news of Divock Origi withdrawing from international duty with a thigh injury, his compatriot Christian Benteke has also now withdrawn (via Echo).

It means he will miss his side’s friendly match with Portugal. The game was originally scheduled to take place in Brussels, but after this week’s terror attacks it has been moved to the Portuguese city of Leiria.

The Belgian FA confirmed the news on Twitter, saying “@chrisbenteke leaves the squad for #porbel injured. He will recover in his club.”

It caps a miserable week for Benteke, who was earlier lambasted for his decision to criticise Klopp and the club over his lack of playing time since Christmas.

More importantly, it once again leaves us with a hole to fill in attack.

Ings, Benteke, and Origi are all now in the treatment room – and with Daniel Sturridge still not fully fit, it means we lacking in numbers ahead of what will be a hugely busy month of April.

Let’s hope both he and Origi can recover quickly.
