Liverpool fitness update: Firmino, Moreno, Lucas and two long-term absentees

Jurgen Klopp has handed Liverpool fans some great news while away in Tenerife.

The German has decided to take all the players not on international duty on the trip, which is part training part relaxation.

The group includes first-teamers who are coming back from injuries including Alberto Moreno, Lucas, Roberto Firmino and two long-term injury victims Danny Ings and Joe Gomez.

According to Klopp, all are progressing well, and Moreno especially should be ready to face Tottenham after the international break, the official website reports.

“It’s really big for us. We let him come in this morning, training light – no real challenges, he could pass a few balls and things like this,” Klopp began.

“But it was really good and he felt absolutely nothing, so from tomorrow he is completely back in the race, which is very important for us.

“Roberto Firmino is in a good way and Lucas [Leiva] is in a good way here. Joe Gomez and Danny Ings can work really hard and use the time here.

“It’s good for all. We are close together and it’s a nice camp, to be honest. It’s really good, a lot of swimmers around us! The best swimmers of Germany I saw here.

“It’s a busy place where we train but the hotel when we go and have a little sleep after lunch and enjoy the time is important. Hard work and then good rest – that’s what makes success probable.”

Jon Flanagan provides an able deputy for Moreno, but getting Roberto Firmino back in the starting XI is crucial.

The Brazilian has emerged as one of our best players, and we imagine our ball retention and ability to finish chances against Southampton last weekend would have increased had he been available.

Lucas is always a solid option, while it’d be fantastic to see Danny Ings or Joe Gomez make a bench before the end of the campaign.

Neither have represented Liverpool yet under Klopp, but seem to have the hunger and desire that would suit him.
