Liverpool loanee described as ‘a breath of fresh air’

Liverpool’s teenage Spanish starlet Sergi Canos has been praised heavily by Brentford manager Dean Smith.

19-year-old Canos has shone in the Championship, bagging four goals in 29 appearances so far during a successful loan spell.

As a result, Canos has been called up the Spanish Under-19 squad again, having already won two caps at that level.

“It shows what a good player he is. He’s only a young lad and still learning the game,” Smith said.

“He’s a breath of fresh air around the place. He’s still learning and still will be.

“He gets very frustrated with himself. He missed the chance against Charlton and he takes it on himself that it’s cost us.

“We keep telling him it’s one thing in a game and it happens; he needs to keep on doing the right things.”

Liverpool snapped up Canos from Barcelona back in 2013 and have been nurturing him carefully during the following years. He was a key member of the Under-21 side last term but Brendan Rodgers and co. thought it was time for him to get first-team experience and sent him to Brentford for this campaign.

Upon Jurgen Klopp’s arrival, he recalled many of the loanees following an injury crisis, but interestingly allowed Canos to stay in London – perhaps because he’s enjoying such a profitable season for his development.

The youngster can play on either flank and prides himself on his ability to dribble to the byline and put in a cross. He has excellent close control and isn’t afraid to take risks, although he’s small and not yet a physical specimen by any stretch of the imagination.

His time in the physical Championship will help this part of his game tenfold, and it’ll be interesting to see whether Klopp brings Canos on Liverpool’s pre-season tour.
