Argentine paper claims Liverpool have bid £5.7m for River Plate striker

Liverpool have made a bid of £5.7m for River Plate striker Lucas Alario, reports Argentine newspaper infobae.

The 23-year-old still plies his trade in Argentina, but his club are asking for £8.5m – a fee which ourselves, and fellow interested clubs Inter, Ajax and Palermo have so far not been willing to meet.

Usually when a little known foreign paper makes a claim about a potential transfer involving a club they specialise in, we should take notice.

Alario moved to River from Colon last year, but has scored ten goals in 19 league games in that time, generating interest from Europe.

Despite the reports of a bid, Alario’s agent suggests any interest is at a very early stage.

“In Europe teams are interested, but there is nothing specific. It’s all very premature,” said agent Pedro Aldave.

“In the long or short, will have a transfer that’s very good for him and will be very good for River too.”

Alario hasn’t been called up by his country yet, but is growing a reputation in his homeland and seems destined for Europe at some point. From research, he’s strong, two-footed and despite being 5 ft. 11′, is a superb header of the ball with a huge leap.

If Liverpool are bidding for strikers, it seems like Christian Benteke’s Anfield career is probably up. The Belgian made disparaging remarks about Jurgen Klopp recently (via ESPN), and having fallen down the pecking order – we’d be surprised if Liverpool didn’t cash in on him this summer.

Klopp made his name at Borussia Dortmund by signing unknowns and turning them into world-class operators. The likes of Shinji Kagawa, Mats Hummels and Ilkay Gundogan were not well known before they arrived at Borussia Dortmund, so Liverpool fans should perhaps be excited when we’re linked with players of Alario’s ilk.
