Liverpool want Gotze cheap so they can target top winger as well

Liverpool’s chances of signing an established winger this summer will rely on how much they’re made to spend on Bayern Munich’s Mario Gotze, reports Raphael Honigstein in Sport1.

The article claims that while Gotze is Liverpool’s absolute priority and we’ll do everything we can to bring him to Anfield, our ability to attract a top wide-man as well depends on what the German playmaker costs.

Gotze has his heart set on reuniting with Jurgen Klopp according to the Guardian, and with the 23-year-old’s contract expiring in 2017 and no renewal discussions yet taking place, he’s likely attainable.

In fact, the report suggests we could buy him for something between £15m and £20m, which would be a jaw-dropping bargain. Even for £20m, there’d still be plenty of money for Klopp to play with as he’ll be offloading the likes of Christian Benteke and Mario Balotelli – hopefully for maximum profit.

In terms of out and out wingers, Klopp has Jordon Ibe to choose from, but the young Englishman is out of form and out of favour. Lazar Markovic will return in the summer and could be given a chance, but the wide areas definitely lack experience and quality at the moment.

Lucas Moura was mooted as a potential target in Mercato365, but to suggest we’ll sign both Gotze and Moura this summer seems a tad ambitious!
