Bayern chairman discusses Mario Gotze to Liverpool, wants a coffee with playmaker to sort everything out

Bayern Munich chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge was coy when asked for clarification on the future of Liverpool’s well publicised summer target Mario Gotze.

Jurgen Klopp is confident he’ll be able to bring the 23-year-old to Anfield in the summer, the Guardian claimed at the end of last month, but Bayern’s head honcho is refusing to contemplate the matter until the end of the season – describing the links to Liverpool as ‘speculation’.

He does however suggest that Gotze will not be sold back to Borussia Dortmund, promising for us Reds fans.

“His contract runs until 2017, everything else is speculation. Neither Mario nor his advisers have so far ruled [on his future],” Rummenigge told German newspaper Schwabische Zeitung.

“Also I have read that he’s on Borussia Dortmund’s list. This is wrong. A conversation about Mario Götze did not exist with Hans-Joachim Watzke.”

Rumminigge also refused to be drawn on Carlo Ancelotti’s opinion of the playmaker, which some Reds could also see as a positive sign in our attempts to capture Gotze.

“We are in the crucial weeks of the season, with full concentration on the here and now. Only that counts now. After games are played, Mario can gladly come to me for a coffee in my office to talk about his future,” he concluded.

Under Pep Guardiola, Gotze’s been in and out of the team, which will not appease a player of his ability with a CV that includes Bundesliga titles and the winning goal in a World Cup final with Germany.

Simply, Gotze has the ability to develop into one of the best attacking midfielders in Europe, and it’d be sensational if he got that opportunity on Merseyside.

It does of course depend on whether Bayern are willing to sell, but they’ve yet to offer Gotze a new contract and the suggestions are that he’s available for the right price. The Guardian report we mentioned earlier claims Gotze has his heart set on a Liverpool switch, so we really hope he turns down the offer of Rummenigge’s coffee and doesn’t change his mind!

Champions League football at Anfield next term will massively help our chances of persuading Gotze to sign, although we have to navigate past his old side Dortmund in the Europa League quarterfinals to keep that dream alive.
