Sturridge bullishly claims he’s as good as Mats Hummels – ‘I’m at his level’

Liverpool forward Daniel Sturridge is relishing the challenge he and his side face on Thursday night against Borussia Dortmund, the official website reports.

The striker was left on the bench last week, but proved his mettle at the weekend against Stoke – scoring a goal and putting in a superb 90 minute performance. In fact, it was the first time he’s played the full match since February’s League Cup Final defeat against Manchester City.

When asked about Dortmund’s excellent starting centre-back, Mats Hummels, who scored last Thursday, Sturridge claimed the German is only as good a defender as he is a striker.

“I’m at his level, so I don’t look at him as anyone who’s bigger than me or better than me or I’m in awe,” Sturridge said.

“Not at all. He’s the same as me. We face players at the top level in the Premier League – it’s the best league in the world.

“We face defenders who don’t probably get as much credit as they deserve. I’ve been playing at the top level for a long time now so it’s nothing new.

“It’s just going to be a great night for everyone, and you can’t let nerves get the better of you. You just have to enjoy it, that’s what life’s all about.”

Sturridge’s quotes are brilliant, and display the confidence he has in his ability. And so he should, because when he’s fit and firing, the Englishman is as good as anyone left in the competition.

It’s possible though that we’ll only see Sturridge from the bench, with Divock Origi leading the line superbly last time out and bagging a brace at the weekend against Stoke.

It’s possible Klopp will go with both, but we think he’ll be sensible and use three in midfield instead.
