Long-serving defender Martin Skrtel is reportedly considering his Liverpool future after falling down the defensive pecking order in recent months, according to ESPN.
ESPN reports that the Slovakian signed a new contract prior to Jurgen Klopp’s arrival last summer, but might look to leave if his first-team opportunities do not improve.
The same report understands that a number of clubs from the Premier League and abroad are keeping tabs on the 31-year-old ahead of this summer’s transfer window.
Skrtel has struggled to regain his place since returning from a two-month injury layoff, with Dejan Lovren and Mamadou Sakho Klopp’s preferred centre-back pairing.
The veteran, who joined us from Zenit St Petersburg in 2008, did not even get a run out when both Lovren and Sakho were rested for Sunday’s win over Bournemouth.
And his chances are likely to get even more limited upon the arrival of Cameroon international Joel Matip on a free transfer from Schalke 04 at the end of the season.
Skrtel has been an excellent servant for Liverpool, playing 317 times for us in eight years, but it seems unlikely that he will establish himself as a regular under Klopp again.
His age also means that this summer could be the perfect time for both parties to instrument a change, with Skrtel able to spend the final years of his career playing regularly.
