Liverpool fans around the world are understandably furious about the club’s decision to make Michael Owen an “international ambassador”.

Owen, who scored 158 goals in 297 appearances and won four major trophies at Anfield, left in a cloud of gloom in the summer of 2004 as the curtain came down on the Gerard Houllier era.

Rafa Benitez was the man chosen to replace him, but instead of sticking around and seeing what the Spaniard could achieve, “Liverpool fan” Owen flounced off to Real Madrid in a £8 million deal.

His stay in the Spanish capital lasted a mere 12 months, and he soon returned to the perennially sinking ship, Newcastle United.

He finally destroyed whatever goodwill remained when he left the relegated Geordies to join Man Utd in the summer of 2009.
