Liverpool could offload Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi to Sweden next season, following the young forward’s year on loan in Germany.

The 18-year-old signed last summer at the very end of August, but was immediately shipped to Frankfurt, who ply their trade in the Bundesliga II. He’s only managed to score once, having been a substitute for the vast majority of the campaign.

Kalmar FF, who are a mid-table Swedish side, reckon they’ve a chance of acquiring Awonoyi next term, having already spoken with us about the potential deal.

“We are in contact with Liverpool about having Taiwo on loan. It can be anything, we’ll see what happens,” sports director Thomas Andersson Borstam told the club’s website.

“We have had a good and positive dialogue, and so we’ll see where it lands.”

Awoniyi has done superbly for Nigeria at youth level, which tempted us into signing him from the Imperial Academy in his homeland.

He’s quick and has an eye for goal, but as you’d expect, is extremely raw. This loan spell hasn’t gone exactly to plan, with Frankfurt nervous about giving the striker more minutes – as they’ve been battling relegation and are still not safe.

For us, the Swedish league sounds like a step down from Bundesliga II, but if it means Awoniyi can get more regular game time, perhaps it’s a good thing.
