Jordan Henderson is doing everything he can to get fit in order to play a part in the Europa League Final on May 18.

The Reds are due to face Sevilla in Basel, knowing a win will guarantee European silverware and a spot in next season’s Champions League.

Henderson’s not been able to participate since early April, when he played the first 45 minutes of our 1-1 draw with Borussia Dortmund – but a knee ligament injury has ruled him out for over a month now.

In total this season, he’s been restricted to 15 Premier League starts – only five more than ‘crocked’ forward Daniel Sturridge…

“I’m hoping it will be sooner rather than later. I’m doing everything I can to get back fit as quickly as possible,” Henderson told Sky Sports.

“I’ve had a good week so far, so hopefully I can have another good week and see where I am at the end of that. I’m being very positive, I’m working very hard and hopefully it’s sooner rather than later.

“The Europa League is the main priority for me. It would be huge just to be involved and I’d love to be a part of that if I could.

“At the same time I’ve got to make sure that my knee is right because I don’t want to do myself further damage.”

When asked about his chances of playing for Roy Hodgson’s England team in France this summer, the 26-year-old simply reiterated his desire to get fit and help Liverpool – quotes symbolic of the skipper’s passion.

“Yes, hopefully. The injury hasn’t come at a great time for me but it doesn’t really make a difference – it’s about the [Liverpool] team and the cup final,” he continued.

“Whether I am involved or not, I am hoping we put on another good performance and win a trophy.”

Even if Henderson regain fitness, his spot in Liverpool’s starting XI is by no means guaranteed anymore.

Emre Can’s performances and return from injury mean he’s the first-choice in any midfield double-pivot, with James Milner – excellent against Villarreal – the favourite to start alongside him.
